High carbon Camden

Camden Council continues to grant planning permission for schemes which result in a huge amount of carbon emissions from their construction, many including carbon-intensive basements (see above the construction on Pancras Way).

Climate Emergency Camden has submitted a response to the London Plan consultation with highlights the failure of planning policy to reduce the carbon intensity of construction.

.

The development at 2-6 Pancras Way for example, was granted permission without the applicant having to submit a Whole Life Carbon Assessment, despite the fact that the GLA said that this was required.

Neither Camden’s planners or the developer wanted to account for the high level’s of carbon that would result from extensive concrete basement:

The existing building, with its heavy concrete frame, could have been reused.
