Discussion about carbon at Planning Committee meeting 20.03.25

Climate Emergency Camden made a deputation at this meeting to object to the unnecessary demolition of Euston Tower (see attached document).

We were pleased that committee members raised questions about the carbon impacts of the development, both in construction and operation. The scheme will result in around 50,000 tonnes CO2e being released into the atmosphere over the next few years, which is incompatible with our national carbon budgets.

Unfortunately, Camden Council routinely enables this type of development which is detrimental to our attempts to mitigate climate breakdown.

It is clear from the planners’ presentation that officers misunderstand the issue of embodied carbon in relation to construction, referring for example to the ‘carbon retained within the building’. The embodied carbon of the existing concrete is not actually physically in the concrete. It is already in the atmosphere. We have been calling for carbon literacy training for council officers and it seems that it is more needed than ever.
